Me, too. At some point I concluded that the demise of the species is inevitable, due to the industrial revolution, but that without this terrible decision, we would not be so comfortably alive and talking and understanding things. We are lucky to be born so close to the end.
Our ancestors were not less intelligent and capable than us. I don't think that your confidence that they had no idea what they were doing is warranted! I also don't see much evidence that we are 'up to it'.

You are right. They just didn't progress much. They didn't figure out how to. And they had no where near the knowledge we do. The evidence we are up to it is what we've achieved beyond our ancestors. We figured out how to solve difficult problems. Collectively.
