When you hear that western democracies cannot impose effective quarantines during a pandemic: that’s not because our populations are too free, but because our present administrations are not selected for competence.

Indeed, that is the greatest weakness of democracies: They cannot take decisions which can only be understood by people with above average IQ.

Not true. Democracy does not work via consensus, but by delegation. The problem is that we are delegating to people that are good at gaming the democratic processes, not to people who are invested in the fate of society.

Neither was ours, but at least they did the right thing. I never ever ever thought I’d be happy to live under an authoritarian-leaning government but I guess there always has to be a first time.

We used to do quarantines, but we forgot how around 50 years ago. I did a thread a while back of newspaper clippings...

Old newspapers have tons of notices of quarantine laws, actual quarantines. Cities were definitely put on lockdown for polio. Enforced quarantine for measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis. We learned a lot, belatedly, in 1918-19, then gradually forgot it. https://www.newspapers.com/clip/46607703/york-polio-quarantine-1941/ …

I don't feel too poorly governed in Germany right now... do you really feel all western democracies are suffering equally from incompetent leadership? Compared to to our favorite autocracies that is - not some hypothetical utopian technocracy one could dream up?

Exactly! It's now fully documented! What's even more amazing is imo how all the administrations of all our countries are selected for their same level of incompetence...
