To prevent hoarding, the surgeon general and the media have spread misinformation that masks won't protect you against the coronavirus. Studies show that surgical masks and N95 masks reduce the risk of infection with respiratory viruses! Please consider wearing masks in public.

The WHO itself did.https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masks …

The WHO advises that in addition to wearing masks, you also need to keep your hands clean etc. I have not seen any study that supports the claim that masks don't reduce the risk of infection, but several in support.

The WHO has been behind on this issue but has been transparent about the supply crisis for masks. But the masks do help! My god it is true!

I think the supply crisis shows poor management. The administration should have been able to predict the demand in January, ordered what they needed, and ask producers to increase capacity. The stores were predictably cleared out (in part by price gougers) in late February.
