Fear is the opposite of love.

I am not sure if I understand. I can fear and love the same thing at the same time, for instance.

Fear can trigger the worst in humans - beware not to exploit it! Panic helps to run away from saber-toothed tigers. For viruses it is better to physically keep distance but also keep your empathy and shop for the elderly.

(P. Graham?) Anyway, I realised today that the extreme scenarios I'd imagined will not come to play for exactly this reason: With a high enough risk of death (ie ICUs full), a high enough risk of infection (in "hot" regions), then people will start avoiding infection at all cost
-
Which of course means people will engage in actually effective measures, so I'd imagine, above all else, social distancing. I realise the time lag for ICU admissions behind new infections, and the issue of cumulation, but I'd still guess that - you might get an equilibrium.
