        Fear can trigger the worst in humans - beware not to exploit it! Panic helps to run away from saber-toothed tigers. For viruses it is better to physically keep distance but also keep your empathy and shop for the elderly. @Plinz Be strong and lead people through the crisis!

        (P. Graham?) Anyway, I realised today that the extreme scenarios I'd imagined will not come to play for exactly this reason: With a high enough risk of death (ie ICUs full), a high enough risk of infection (in "hot" regions), then people will start avoiding infection at all cost

        Which of course means people will engage in actually effective measures, so I'd imagine, above all else, social distancing. I realise the time lag for ICU admissions behind new infections, and the issue of cumulation, but I'd still guess that - you might get an equilibrium.
