The EU/US gaslighting on masks reminds me of how Lamaze was invented because the Soviet Union couldn't afford to import painkillers but rather than openly admit pain was not a priority they tried to convince women you can breath your way through childbirthhttps://www.inkstonenews.com/health/coronavirus-health-researchers-urge-global-authorities-consider-broadening-use-face-masks/article/3074453 …

I would prefer an honest position of "the highest value use for masks is in hospitals" alongside Taiwan-style aggressive pro-mask industrial policy so we all get masks before the second wave hits in autumn. But our leaders believe their own bullshit and so don't bother.

Most of our clothes are imported, but there's still a substantial manufacturing base in the US. Any clothing factory can make simple cloth masks and I bet many could make N95s if the feds, or the state of California, offered to buy up to a billion at the October retail price.pic.twitter.com/qtcRj8tewY

OT: do you have a good sense of the efficacy of cloth masks vs nothing? i keep running across conflicting info on this

My understanding is cloth masks are of dubious value for the healthy but make the sick much less infectious. Even if cloth masks don't help the healthy, universal cloth masks would be good if we worry about stigma and/or simply not knowing who is sick.

yeah it's spreading infection that I'm more interested in… I guess I'm wondering if sewing cloth masks could be a good way for people (possibly me) to use their "do something" energy

in a study of hand made masks made from cotton t-shirts they had a filtration rate of ~65% compared to an N95s 95%- not great, but also far better than zero and there are domestic manufacturers of non woven polypropylene which is commonly used in mask filters

I wonder if HEPA filters (eg vacuum cleaners) would be a better material than t-shirts?https://atrix.com/product/vacbp6-10p-backpack-series-hepa-filter-bags-10-pack/ …

The real blocker is the structure of the mask - less so the filter if you have a reusable respirator, there's all sorts of home brew things you could use as a filter which would be pretty good in filtering particulates

They might be better than N95 if you got the full HEPA filtration from the collector bag and the HEPA certification wasn't measured by the difference between the input and exhaust of the vacuum cleaner as a whole. Even if not, if you can pull air through it, better than shirts.
