we get the opportunity to play scientist in narrow slices of reality, otherwise we get to drink the output collective koolaid what i mean to say is we can't validate everything and are stuck trusting authority, most cited article, or top search result

maybe some of the antidote to this is sense making communities, who can collectively verify more than an individual can and bootstrap new comers

Yes. Even someone with a bachelors in stem has unlikely done anything to merit any kind of epistemic authority. It's all posturing, founded on factors external to science
