The reason that the US is failing at dealing with existential danger is not that it's a democracy, but that its leadership is broken. The US is no longer on any kind of mission.

It's a classical symptom of the age of decadence and the resulting fall of an empire when its leader propagates counterfactual world views. Mankind just hasn't figured out yet how to build a stable civilization. Democracy without a well educated majority is inherently doomed.

The model of the US is normally that the actual leadership remains in the background and the president is a competent actor that has to convince the audience that the plan. The way Trump fails at his acting suggests that that the leading institutions and elites don't have a plan.
