I could do without any mongering, thank you very much. I mean: is it going to be way worse than a "normal" flu? Yes. Is it going to be "spanish flu" bad? No. The government (...of the USA...) could do with a bit more panic. (Parts of) The populace could do with less panic.

I am not observing a lot of panic. Yes, toilet paper at Costco is gone, and masks are gone too, but both will be back in a couple of weeks. The neighborhood networks around here are very nervous, but folks try their best to keep it together and mount a coordinated response.

Do you have an example where a population was faced with a real crisis but broke down because of fear? I suspect that fear can be a very healthy, sobering and focusing emotion, as long as it does not lead to denial and paralysis.

Broke down as in "was paralysed"? Not off the cuff, no. But I am sure that I heard of at least one example, though I can't recall it :/ Broke down as in "rioting and looting"? Plenty. A bit of fear (or concern, rather) is good, but too much fear...not so much.

I think it is best to deal with the reality of the crisis before the crisis hits, instead of later, when everyone feels betrayed
