I could do without any mongering, thank you very much. I mean: is it going to be way worse than a "normal" flu? Yes. Is it going to be "spanish flu" bad? No. The government (...of the USA...) could do with a bit more panic. (Parts of) The populace could do with less panic.

I am not observing a lot of panic. Yes, toilet paper at Costco is gone, and masks are gone too, but both will be back in a couple of weeks. The neighborhood networks around here are very nervous, but folks try their best to keep it together and mount a coordinated response.

Fear itself.

I think the problem is not the fear itself, but its blocking. Free flowing fear (full awareness of what can go wrong) is what focuses you when you drive a car, so your attention does not lapse. Blocked fear is what lets you ruminate and act irrationally.

Fight-flight-freeze responses shut down the higher functioning areas of the brain (sympathetic nervous system kicks into gear), so problem solving flies out the door when we promote fear. Not that calm mongering will help the fearful, but for those not yet afraid, it's fine.
