People seem to have an easier time imagining living with a pandemic that kills the elderly en mass than the government competently mobilizing. Whatever else is said this reveals a staggering lack of confidence in the American system of government.

Last but not least, the internationally linked grassroots response of competent professionals and individuals on social media is incredible and unprecedented. A lot of folks are alerting communities, debating the ground truth, moderating the discourse and interfacing politics.

Yeah the sincerity and quality of the grassroots response here has been very heartening. But without leadership and actiom from the state, it amounts to a small fraction of its potential.
