But Joscha, do you think its possible that your social circles are very different to the average, i assume you mostly talk to other academics who, because of their exposure have a certain out look on life.

Almost everyone feels a need to be part of something bigger, which is why religions and ideologies work.

Why did we evolution bring this need to the surface of our species?

Just to clarify, you are disagreeing with the above statement, or just adding in a negative to cooperative groups?

I’m not disagreeing. Just adding observations of group think .

Shared ideology is not a prerequisite for cooperation. Nor do both parties have to benefit equally or at all. Helping the enemy of an enemy even at personal cost can be an effective strategy.

Transactional cooperation means that the other one is going to turn around to eat you whenever the incentives change. It's hard to build an effective society this way.

Societies are not built, they are emergent phenomena of constituent individuals. I would be interested to hear of non-transactional cooperation. Even a mother's love is chemically and biologically driven by the need to propogate her genetics.

I think you are mixing different modes of functional description into the same model. Subject != organism != evolutionary optimization != physical implementation. And of course societies are constructed and optimized, even if later generations think it's emergent performance art.

Sure functional models should frame reality through a specific context, but like paper maps of the world they are scaled down to accommodate for the user's limited capacity. RE: societies, they grow out of their natural hierarchies and geo-constraints. Origin stories come later.
