People want to be good? I believe people always have a selfish motive, even when we do something totally selfless like give to the homeless, you're primarily doing it to make yourself feel good.
Transactional cooperation means that the other one is going to turn around to eat you whenever the incentives change. It's hard to build an effective society this way.

That’s exactly what is happening on the left right now. To pin point out diversity you’er not creating a society but small tribes . This usually happens in the teenage years.

Societies are not built, they are emergent phenomena of constituent individuals. I would be interested to hear of non-transactional cooperation. Even a mother's love is chemically and biologically driven by the need to propogate her genetics.

I think you are mixing different modes of functional description into the same model. Subject != organism != evolutionary optimization != physical implementation. And of course societies are constructed and optimized, even if later generations think it's emergent performance art.
