China is not best understood as a communist country, or as fascist. China is modernist. Many western countries were modernist between 1920 and 1960. Now they are postmodernist. Modernists believe that sociology is a field of engineering, postmodernists think it's a moral opinion.

Not sure what you mean. I do mean that there is an unfinished intellectual project that has a natural solution that is not the one characterized either by what we call modernity or post modernity.

I suspect that the simultaneous decline of modernism in the postwar era may not have been simply a mutual decision (for instance, to prevent another world war), but an inevitable development intrinsic to modernism itself.

Flashback to reading End of The Road by Barth. Loosely paraphrasing, I think - language is descriptive rather than prescriptive. Life is too. Indignation/self-righteousness pairs with "should/shan't" while life is probably better seen as "did/didn't"
