Ex Machina was a remarkable film, because it did also play a Turing Test on its audience. What do you recognize when you see Ava?https://twitter.com/lexfridman/status/1235250607688208385 …

Ava's smile at the end of Ex Machina is the moment she passed the Turing Test & the test of consciousness. She is smiling to herself. Alex Garland (creator of Ex Machina) pointed this out. It is now one of my favorite moments in an AI film. Full episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU-mkuMU428 … pic.twitter.com/uEitiIPyN8

Are you suggesting that if the audience sympathizes with Ava they she passes the Turing Test on a much higher level, a human empathetic level and we accept her as a conscious entity?

No! One of the great features of the movie is that it allows the audience to make its own decision, because it reveals all empathetic cues sent by the AI as ensnarement. I think Ava may be profoundly non-human.

Which is how most men feel after their girlfriend dumps them.

That they were ensnared by somebody profoundly non-human.

Yet they were just misunderstanding someone profoundly non-male, by projecting their own psychology and desires into the vaguely similar shape that they mistakenly believe to recognize

Yes, profound. From that perspective, Ex Machina is an observation of the process of deep deception by exploiting a human's fundamental drives and assumptions.

We are anthropomorphizing people too much, too

I call it theomorphizing (or something similar), when we treat humans as being some kind of supernatural power, instead of just normal animals, which are simply very complex collections of atoms.
