I was perplexed about her intention to get out of her prison. Why would an AI even want that? It's a human intention, which AI wouldn't necessarily have unless it's specifically programmed into it.

Yes, I thought that either the AI was explicitly programmed to escape (eg by setting a particular location as a goal state), or that it followed some option maximization principle from which breaking out could be derived. It made no sense that the AI left the coder alive though.

Are you suggesting that if the audience sympathizes with Ava they she passes the Turing Test on a much higher level, a human empathetic level and we accept her as a conscious entity?
-
No! One of the great features of the movie is that it allows the audience to make its own decision, because it reveals all empathetic cues sent by the AI as ensnarement. I think Ava may be profoundly non-human.

I think that the only people who liked that movie are nerd guys who feel guilty about wanting a robot woman companion. I thought the movie was ridiculously silly and simply pandering to dumb mainstream fears. Her was so much more meaningful and intelligently done.

They were like, literally, the opposite movies. It's like comparing a horror movie to a comedy.

Do you think that what Dennett’s describes as the intentional stance is what allows humans to recognize themselves in the machine?
-
The interesting thing in Ex Machina is that it’s not obvious what you are looking at, so you have to deconstruct the sense of recognition

Ha, this is a neat take. For me, I was blown away when she strode by the literally-dying-in-a-fire Caleb without so much as glancing. She didn't even have to *resist the temptation* to look. I thought "no way was her brain trained on human brains".
