If you google masks, you will stumble into dozens of news articles telling you that they are useless and you should not buy them. Is this a coordinated campaign to increase the probability that medical responders can stock up at Walmart, or just journalists copying each other?

What if they're actually trying to save them for metal workers, painters, landscapers etc? How many of those folks will develop lung problems due to not having respirators for a few months?

I suspect that a lot of painting, metal working and landscaping will be suspended while everybody is wearing respirators on the street.

I think it’s a coordinated campaign journos are only the tools to spread that campaign.

Increasing demand will increase supply. The problem is that this should have happened two months ago. Btw I think the easiest explanation is that most journalists are at Kegan 3

Coordination requires, well, coordination. Not a trait in plentiful supply...

No, many journalists are in the same FB groups and mailing lists, of course they coordinate.

Or perhaps it is common knowledge among medical professionals, and when a journalist asks an expert, he often gets the same answer. As far as I know, the conditions that make masks useful are not present in everyday situations, so you don't see doctors wearing them outside.

Can you please point me to a scientific source (study) that shows that masks don’t help against infection?

Well, they are running out of stock, and about half of the masks in the U.S. are imported from China.
