Who are the best amateur philosophers, past and present -- people who do important philosophical work outside an academic setting? (Of course, the distinction only makes sense for relatively recent times.)

Misha Gromov once told me that philosophy ended with Darwin, because there was basically nothing left to discover using philosophical methods. Russell was just a great writer and educator. What's left can only be done by mathematicians and computer scientists.

As always, meaningful progress in understanding nature is not the result of applying prefabricated methods, but can only be achieved by extremely few exceptional individuals, because it requires digging down the entire distance to the foundations before going back to the edge

Maybe if you're talking about 'paradigm shifts' rather than business as usual. The few 'exceptional individuals' (who can only be identified after the event) exist in a community of 'pilgrims' navigating to a 'new land'. Without the community, the exceptionals wouldn't exist.

I sincerely believe that the standards of scholarship in the humanities are so poor by now that the “community” does more harm than good to the student.

Have you looked at hiring criteria in the last 20 years?

I don't occupy that world. However, it seems a bit of a generalisation.
