It's a common misconception that empathy makes people more compassionate. Often, it just makes them more programmable. (And a lot of highly compassionate people have poor empathy.)

Synchronization with a group mind, openness to manipulation, and ability to co-manipulate others.

They are separate things, in my categorization system. Empathy is second person output focus (creativity in helping others do what they want to do). While programmability is third person input focus (risk-avoidance in complex problem solving).

But sometimes third person input is associate with sympathy, which is sometimes described in the same way empathy is. (Though they are very different, in my mind. Empathy is actually feeling other's feelings, while sympathy is a more rationalization of what others are feeling.)

Seems to me the dangers of highly empathic people are rather on the side of manipulation or split reality

I'm more into an orthogonal theory that everyone has a fixed amount of empathy (like attention) and they prioritize it in different ways. Like, the Spanish are very friendly to you if you are their friend. Americans are always friendly to everyone but aren't as much to friends.
