Interesting exercise: before publicly disagreeing with someone, try to figure out on how many levels of modeling their argument rests. To resolve the disagreement, you will usually both need to get at least one level higher.
You can go all the way, but it means that there will be nothing left to insist on, of course.

No, I disagree. Try it - take an argument you care about and work it backwards by asking yourself ‘why do I want that?’ If the answer is ‘because x, y, z’, keep going with x, y and z. Tell me where you end up. Eventually it gets to ‘I just do’. That’s a core value for you :-)

Hm, my experience differs! When I am not lucid, I lack attention to go deep enough, but when I am I can identify the construction of the aesthetics that informs my preferences, and the generators for such constructions need only information theoretically constrained assumptions.
