Correcting a link to the Lord Paradox posting. The correct link is http://causality.cs.ucla.edu/blog/index.php/2019/08/13/lords-paradox-the-power-of-causal-thinking/ … and it should go to: Lord Paradox and the Power of Causal Thinking. (Thanks to Stephen Leroy for noting). #Bookofwhy

I am extremely alarmed by how casually scepticism of the posited causal model is swept under the rug. Literally no evidence at all is given, only that it "seems reasonable" and sceptics are just too attached to "mainstream statistics".

But surely the correctness of the causal model itself is absolutely essential? And surely any scientific mind would justifiably want evidence that the model is actually right?

Acting all smug while engaging in overtly pseudo-scientific practices may also play a role in the limited adoption of causal modelling by mainstream (read: actual) scientists.

In fact this entire post has a conspiratorial undertone and a disdain of "the mainstream" that are huge red flags for pseudo-scientific crankery.

You are talking to Yudea Pearl, probably the most eminent authority on causality in his generation...

I would like to believe that defenders of mainstream listen to me, not because I have an authority in any subject, but because my arguments for revitalizing mainstream make good sense and science would benefit from the revitalizatioin. #Bookofwhy

I agree 100% with @yudapearl’s rejection of his own authority in favor of good arguments. And also appreciate (what I think was) @Plinz’s ribbing remark that the interlocutor’s original point, taken seriously, is itself defeated by an appeal to authority

i.e., the instructive irony @Plinz is trying trying to convey: since @yudapearl is the mainstream authority on causality, and if you mistakenly subscribe to the importance of authority, you must unquestionably accept his proclamations.

I still disagree with some of YP‘s arguments but I would not dismiss them with a reference to their difference to the mainstream

My guess: it’s disagreement due to different staring points. (1) vs (2) (1) the mysterious process by which we generate causal/counterfactual models of reality - vs - (2) our best tools - given output of (1) - to test certain aspects of it, and to not claim too much more
