Western commentators, including economists and political scientists, should admit we don't understand China and its institutions. The future happened in China when we weren't looking. Because we are loathe to admit this, we respond as Qing Dynasty scholars commenting on 19th century US politics: Verbatim repeating the official narrative or using inappropriate models from our own history.

A mature China Studies would be focused on how we can adopt Chinese modernity with Western Characteristics. Much as to how Meji restoration Japan studied the West.

China Studies that took it as a given that an Asian society had reached the next stage of modernity would not be all praise! Ever read 1900s Asian commentators on Europe and America? They could be scathing! Often with good reason. But they weren't in denial.

I found it eye opening to read American commentators on Chinese commentators on the US. They Americans tended to dismiss the parts of the reflection that does not look like they look to themselves in the mirror.
