No, I think you misunderstand him. I found that when I am in the company of mathematicians, physicists and computer scientists, it is very apparent that many are much smarter than me and play in a different league. Most of these geniuses are extremely kind and not condescending.

If I am proficient in a field, I can try to 'out-model' others, i.e. predict their intellectual moves, and thereby understand my own ELO rating. Eg, I might now be able to think thoughts that naturally occurred to Chomsky at 17 or to Wolfram at 20 or Gauss at 10 or Mozart at 8...
