I think the difference is between “pleasing” and “serving”. Pleasing is very different, selfish and often counterproductive to serving. Eg. I can serve someone with truth or I can tell them what they want to hear.

Serving the self is serving others. We are all interconnected, so what is good for us is good for others, in the long run. Nothing is perfect, and there are compromises, obviously, but I can only be healthy when everyone around me is also healthy, so helping you helps me.
