I don't think we can come up with a word, because of the apparent non-dual nature of consciousness, and the inherent duality of language. Not a thing, not a not thing, not a nothing.

But I lean towards the Hameroff/Penrose theory of quantum processing within microbules and quantum state collapse being required for awareness. Quantum entanglement isn't a hand-wave answer, but big implications.
