I thought cats couldn’t pass the mirror test and so don’t have sufficient cognition to be self-aware. They don’t know that what they see in a mirror is them. A lot of cats pass the mirror test. Even those that don't seem to show much recognition tend to get disinterested in the mirror, i.e. they are not freaked out my the mystical ghost cat for long, which seems to imply that they decide that the mirror does not show another cat.
