But does consciousness itself even feed back into the brain? Or is it a mere by-product of mechanical operations that sometimes self-reference? This question is harder than it sounds at first, and requires a pretty specific definition of consciousness.

If consciousness would not "feed back" into the brain, you would either not claim that you are conscious, or your claim would be meaningless (because your message would not be caused by you being conscious).

When an observer maintains a somewhat complex model of present reality, it has to deal with inaccuracy, ambiguity, unknown things and error. Tracking with features are used to constitute the present models (are attended to and experienced as real by the agent) helps with that.
