Yes, but it is not a reaction to the virus. It is almost as if the virus was bred to make more carbon available for biological activity.

Not unless the virus was the first cell. (In that case, it was a von-Neumann probe.) For humans, we can show how they evolved from squirrel like ancestors of primates within 20M years.
