I think that a totalitarian control state will remove so much agency from its citizens that it will fall behind a well organized liberal society, but that liberal societies fail if they cannot establish strong social cohesion and effective error correcting governance.

If the US optimizes for freedom of action, why am I not allowed to buy penicillin, drive without a seatbelt, or build my house as I want? The US is a highly regulated society.
