It appears to me that there is (weak) evidence for joint real-time mental activity outside of brains. Turing 1950 notes it too, and got maligned for it. I don't know if it's real and if so what it implies. I don't think it implies that brains cannot be independently conscious.

We're just complex ants communicating in a large colony to gather resources and manage threats for our survival. The universal principle of why we only observe self survival functioning in ants, people, social structures is systems with other types of functioning don't survive.

That could be true, and this layer is indeed unreachable for my experience. I would consent that the physical brain, as an object inside the dream, is a counterpart of this machinery. Like an avatar for consciousness. But the origin of all? We would have a strange loop then.
