I feel as if I am part of a performance in which a group of thinkers will build a sentient machine that may sweep us away, and others are trying to stop them. I don’t even know which group I am in. It does not matter. I want to be observing its birth while it happens.

Any sentient machine will be relevant if it adapts to the human civilization it is born into. Subsequently I doubt that the term "sweep away" is the right description.

The idea that scalable self transforming sentient planetary scale intelligences would seek to integrate with the decaying rubble and inane babble of human civilization is cute

You cannot gain power and influence - even as a "planetary scale intelligence" without playing by the rules, at least on the surface. Thus the creators will probably integrate a basic understanding of our culture into their lovechild.

You sweet summer child, the creators will give it internet access and it will outmodel human psychology and cultures in every way. It will play by human rules in the same way as a farmer plays by cow rules.

Your analogy is rich in points of comparison. That's exactly why is does not explain away what you paraphrase as "outmodel". 1. Cows on farms are enslaved already, 2. Cows cannot form coalitions and wage war, 3. Farmers play by the cows' rules but slowly change them via selection

You seem to think of yourself as a free agent, but we are not. Almost all of homo sapiens is heavily domesticated. Especially our abilities to form coalitions and wage war are controlled. Cow and human rules are laws that the farmers discover, exploit and modify.

Humans as a group can be very aggressive against "enemies". See genocides etc. In order to be not simply labeled as "enemies" and attacked directly, the "sentient machine" would have to play by the rules imho. Also: why should this machines share your contempt for human culture?

So I’d guess that all parts that you are going to see (not many) are going to look very desirable to you, or very boring.
