      Yann LeCun Retweeted Gary Marcus

GM is the root cause of the purported war between connectionists and symbolists He created it to make himself relevant. But it does not actually exist. Clamoring that DL should be hybridized with symbol manipulation is useless. Showing how to do it would be useful.https://twitter.com/GaryMarcus/status/1200798551132889090 …

      Yann LeCun added,

This is a terrific graph, which highlights the historical roots of the animosity between neural nets and classical AI It also implicitly highlights fact that too few people have ever considering merging the best of the two traditions History is zero sum, when we need hybrids! https://twitter.com/IntuitMachine/status/1200796873495318528 …

To be fair, this war did exist once. Minsky actively fought the connectionists, and the dynamical systems people fought against symbolic AI. Calling it a war may be overblown, but they tried to get each other's work defunded and mind share diminished. But that was long ago.

Also, to be fair, I think LeCun and Hinton are happy with the state of progress of DL, happy with the commercial products of specialized "intelligence", and happy to leave AGI research and debates to the philosophers.

I am finding myself quite reinvigorated scanning through the papers by Professor Stephen Grossberg of Boston University... So much was figured out ... before it became well-known! :)

That whole "proving perceptrons don't work" thing? Nah, it was simply science, not politics.
