Talked to an old friend who said he’s looking forward to buying stuff today as “it was the most affordable day” for him. I then realized my privilege of non-participation in mass discount sales like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, ..

Until now, I was labeling (internally) my non-participation in such events as “mindful consumption”. But easy to see (in hindsight) how that narrative is confounded with the privilege to buy whatever, whenever.

Replying to @deliprao
Are you saying that the "I buy Tesla Electric to save the environment" brigade aren't mindful saviors of our planet compared to Joe Schmucks eeking miles out of their decrepit gas guzzlers?

No, Delip is pointing out how difficult it is to narrate one's decision about opening, closing or side eying the Amazon browser window during promotional periods around Black Friday in the extremely mindful, lucid, enlightened and considerate political discourse that is twitter.

It is not enough to consciously buy or not buy things on Black Friday, we also have to do it for exactly the right reasons while being exactly on the right level of woke. Otherwise, the consequences of the moral hazard will be disastrous for us mindful mid-tier tech executives.

A lot of “positive” descriptors come entangled with privilege that it’s impossible to disentangle them. For example, the “risk-taker” narrative in startuplandia.

Privilege (of different kinds) is so finely enmeshed in every narrative , and often unnoticeable, that it seems impossible to keep a narrative straight upon examination. That was my OT all about.

Privilege is an interesting building block in a specific ontology that plays a functionally similar role to sin in the Christian universe. Let those that are without privilege cast the first stone! Always exciting how you see a gang of pretty fit individuals line up with stones.

Basically, redpilledness is to wokeness what atheism is to Christianity. It is not a very enlightened state, but the negation of an incorrect model. It may be a necessary step, but you have to rebuild from there.
