For the canonical definitions, look up and fully digest Shannon and Fisher. Very informally, Shannon information is the unexpected part of a message, Fisher information is the measure of what an observation tells you about what caused the observation.

I've read the big "The Information" book by James Gleick. And I don't believe that the unexpected part of the message is the only thing that's considered information, I do see that that's the interesting part of a message to us. But I use "information" in the sense of pattern.
