Media is by definition centralized. It aggregates audience and attention through a (central) distribution channel. Even “social” media is centralized via large social distribution channels (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

? Media is just the plural of medium; nothing about its definition makes it centralized...

If you don't want literalists up in your feed, you shouldn't claim your views are correct "by definition". :)

True. I knew I had it coming. Although, in my defense, “media” has several definitions—one of which is mass media, which does, you know, tend towards centralization.

Worth a longer post, but I think the 20th century model of centralized mass media is historically aberrant and rapidly receding. Right now there’s still an asymmetry in distribution between Twitter users and Twitter. But we are moving toward a future with no privileged nodes.

The 20th century model of organizing several billion people into a superorganism that can feed and provide plumbing to almost everyone is also historically aberrant and may be receding. Mass media played an important role in this, it is not clear what their crash means for us.
