A spirit is an operating system for an autonomous robot. It describes what animates the robot. Being software, it is invisible and does not exist in the physical frame. When the word was invented, the only known autonomous robots were living organisms and their organizations.
I doubt that humans can understand and use concepts that are a billion orders of magnitude more complex than the concept of software.

Exactly. Fully understanding human software and hardware is beyond the conceptual grasp of the human mind. Like an amoeba trying to understand computer software. Such complexity is beyond their physical capacity.
