Bicycles are the best urban mode of transport. High density of people transported. Comparable with public transit, but with the destination flexibility of a ride sharing app. The key requirements are infrastructure and good security so they bicycles don't get stolen.

They are also not really suitable for distances over a couple of miles, children, families, elderly, slightly unfit people, sensitive garments, luggage, shopping, rain, snow, and heat. They work best for young adults in good weather. (I love cycling btw)

Agreed! But much of the urban commute is young adults. And California at least has the weather.

Cycling in SF means you need to carry the bike into the office and apartment. In the South Bay, security is less of an issue, but distances tend to be larger. Bikes are great on Stanford campus
