Bicycles are the best urban mode of transport. High density of people transported. Comparable with public transit, but with the destination flexibility of a ride sharing app. The key requirements are infrastructure and good security so they bicycles don't get stolen.

I sometimes use a trailer to get both kids to school, but that requires a garage. But everything further (sports, music class, playdates) would add more than 1h of exercise to our day, which is unrealistic. US towns are mostly not concentrated enough.

Agreed! But much of the urban commute is young adults. And California at least has the weather.

Cycling in SF means you need to carry the bike into the office and apartment. In the South Bay, security is less of an issue, but distances tend to be larger. Bikes are great on Stanford campus
