Most US media have a self understanding as brain washing machines. Their disagreement is not about whether brains should be washed, but about the brand, smell and tint of the detergent. And don't get me started about schools.

The indoctrination in Eastern Germany was a joke. It was so hamfisted that it created a natural sense of dissidence (sadly not clean neutrality) in almost everyone I met. We also used to watch both East and West German news, which gave rise to a dialectic world view :)
