Is there a meaningful SW/HW distinction to draw in living things?

The colloquial distinction is that you can touch hardware, but not software. Hardware states are addressable by a spacetime location, software states by their causal relationships.

I was recommended this book when thinking about plant intelligence https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18223784-plant-intelligence-and-the-imaginal-realm … - sadly it was lacking in research and waffle-ly. Would love to know a better exploration of plant intelligence.

Me too! Also, what about ecosystemic intelligence, in a non-superstitious and non-wafflely way?

It would follow that the function of the mythological daimons and genii of ancient Greece and Rome was to serve as a way to narratively interact with one's own operating system. Makes perfect sense to me. Probably pretty healthy, if one can avoid literalism.

Also interesting where the analogy of an OS on hardware breaks down. Imagine the hardware constrains the software, & the software sustains/replenishes the hardware, and the balanced exchange of energy/information between it & it's environment across permeable boundaries.

Sussman et al. starts SICP with "This book is dedicated, in respect and admiration, to the spirit that lives in the computer."
