When taking advice from a future self, try to make sure that the future self appears to be sane, spiritually and personally satisfied, and hopefully is not missing important limbs.

Well when you put it that way and if they're from the same chronological time in the future; I take your point. But if you consider the once bitten twice shy principal - the amputee might have some good avoidance strategies/advice Don't do what I did (so to speak)

I think it is sometimes better to follow the advice of people that don't get their limbs bitten off in the first place. They may have discovered the meta problem of how to pick better teachers.
