In my mind, the struggle between Google's quantum supremacy claim and IBM's doubts represents the question whether the classical universe is inefficiently implemented on a substrate that we can still use to climb into a higher computational class, or QM is the wrong formalism.

By definition. The more interesting question is if we can beat classical physics, even after we rebuild it to make locality and definiteness into special cases.
