Art is conscious of the construction of the surface on which it projects, kitsch is not. Kitsch is normative, it identifies with the projective surface. Historians must be self aware to create true art, not ideological kitsch.

As an aside, the main issue with GoT was that B&W took GRRM's art and turned it into kitsch

Yes, it went downhill after it ran out of books. Most of the earlier changes (such as Tyrion not turning out to be a skilled fighter) were actually improvements.
