Significant economy, largely driven by natural resources, but low GDP per capita, high social inequality, large differences in regional development, mostly poor infrastructure, high rate of violent crime and corruption, nepotism, regular embezzlement of public funds etc

Yes, my poll was inspired by the remark of an American friend who told me that I believes that the US is going to become less like Middle Europe and Canada, and will end up similar to what Brazil and India are like today.

Some of the issues the US he is pointing at: destruction of industrial base through outsourcing, loss of cultural cohesion, replacement of civics by postmodern ideologies, inefficiency and capture of regulation, decay of infrastructure, cost disease in health care and education.

While many people have strong (mostly moral) opinions about what should be done, changing the dynamics of complex social systems is hard, because everything has so many interdependencies, and most attempts to improve things will be absorbed or have unintended consequences.
