Just me or is philosophy actually a complete shitshow? When I was younger I really wanted to major in philosophy because I thought it was "learning to think real good about abstract stuff", but eventually found out it was "quoting other famous people's stuff at each other"

Just learning those previously “charted space of ideas” takes decades of research and study. Then fully understanding those ideas can take a lifetime. So it’s true, very few philosophers actually grow that charted space of ideas. They explore that space. Psychonauts.

Interesting thread. I was deeply interested and motivated to learn philosophy formally at one point but have prioritized practical skills. Someday I wish to learn more philosophy formally.

The phenomena you're discussing - perhaps it is because the bright people of our generation are busy building things more than thinking about them.

I think its the case with any field of study. Most people are going to be piggy-backing on the works of others. In the case of philosophy, the work of others is strictly attached to their names. Yet, every field has its select few creative thinkers that make something new.
