Forgiveness is a weird concept when you think about it. Actions have consequences; you can’t magically erase them. How can forgiveness mean something other than pretending a falsehood is true?

There's something odd to me about "understanding of why someone could not act differently than they did". One strong form of this looks like "understanding that someone actually did nothing wrong", in which case there's nothing to forgive. But maybe you mean something weaker?

"Eliminating debt that cannot be paid back" hits home for me. And especially when applied to oneself - to admit that *I* can't pay someone back for something.
