One of the problems with religious dogma is that its obvious absurdities have lead even very smart people into a naive atheism and caused tremendous confusion about the nature of self, meaning and transcendence.

I'm curious to know what naive atheism means? Naive In the believe that "there is no God"?

Naive in the sense that God is understood to be the claim that there is a supernatural being that messes with physics. Understood functionally, as an egregore (or Leviathan), God can be as real as an organism. As an experiential phenomenon, God can be as real as the personal self

:/ That there are supernatural beings messing with physics *IS* the main claim of most religions.

These myths act as boot loaders for social software, and as branding to make the group recognizable to its members. If you are epistemologically mature, you'll find it obvious, and if you are not, you are not supposed to touch the software running your social interactions anyway.

It seems that you claim here, hidden among funky sounding fluff ;), is that without people with monkey heads or angels in the sky you cannot build a collective identity which in turn is necessary to build a society. I think a proof for this is missing.

I made no such claim. I just said that this is why religions do it, not that there is no alternative.

In this case, since these myths allowed control few smart people leaving the church may have been a good price to pay.

It was much darker. Throughout much of our history, religions were totalitarian. People that were too smart to accept the myth but too stupid to fully understand its role and the consequences of rejection were locked into monasteries or killed.
