Much of last century's progress in the hard sciences depended on technology and the creation of research communities with critical mass. But for psychology and philosophy of mind, all crucial ideas have probably been discovered (and often lost again) thousands of years ago.
Ergot has somewhat similar effects, and I have heard that it had been cultivated in Hungary, Russia, and some areas of Italy for that purpose. I suspect fMRI studies of people on psychedelics and the related academic research are quite pitiful and would let real shamans weep :)

Agreed, but (I've heard) DMT leaves a long-lasting impact on the mind after just 1 dose, so it makes sense that shamans hold it sacred & thus use it sparingly, & even then only for limited purposes. Actively looking for what DMT does to, say, the default mode network may teach us
