Much of last century's progress in the hard sciences depended on technology and the creation of research communities with critical mass. But for psychology and philosophy of mind, all crucial ideas have probably been discovered (and often lost again) thousands of years ago.

Good point, but applying the scientific method and using modern tech like fMRI may give us new information about the mind that shamans didn't even think to look for. Plus, LSD is still very new to us.

Ergot has somewhat similar effects, and I have heard that it had been cultivated in Hungary, Russia, and some areas of Italy for that purpose. I suspect fMRI studies of people on psychedelics and the related academic research are quite pitiful and would let real shamans weep :)
