I suspect that we are not wired to *think* about future generations, period. Acts of mating and rearing are right here in the present. That was sufficient for (past) evolution/survival, likely not so today.

I disagree. Most people feel some need to consider the fate of the group or species over long time spans, but the rate of change of society is outpacing the ability to regulate for the future (=culture). Spirituality may be the phantom limb that develops after we break culture.
