Would you want to preserve yourself if you could replace yourself by something better?

So consciousness is discrete to some extent?
-
It is a bit like the light in the fridge: it is only there when you look. It gets invented anew when you need it, as a fake memory connecting moments of attention.

So in that sense there’s no way we can be immortal? If consciousness is discontinuous what’s the point of transferring it to a robotic body or whatever? Aside from a “ black mirror” kind of commercial use? Pardon my ignorance, not a researcher(yet?).

Our mental states are only bound together by memories and expectations: illusions about past and future. If we let go if them, we are neither mortal nor immortal. There is only a now. You are not the same self as yesterday, and you will never become your future self.

It feels a lot like I have a continuous sense of self.

Yeah, that's a feature to keep you functioning day-to-day
